Vitamins for Anxiety & Depression

Anxiety and depression are common issues for many people on a daily basis. Fortunately, some vitamins may help you deal with these conditions.
  1. About Depression and Anxiety

    • More than 21 million Americans suffer from depression and anxiety symptoms each year. These symptoms include sadness, guilt, loss of interest in activities, thoughts of suicide, overeating, loss of appetite, excessive sleeping, prolonged periods of wakefulness, and fatigue. Speak with your doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms, so he can correctly diagnose your condition.

    Benefits of B Vitamins

    • Low levels of vitamins B-9, B-12 and B-6 can contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety. Adding these essential vitamins to your daily diet can positively affect the neurotransmitters in the brain.

    Folate

    • If you are deficient in folate, then you are more likely to experience symptoms of depression. Try increasing your intake of foods high in folic acid, such as spinach and some fortified cereals. You may want to try a supplement as well.

    Herbal Supplements

    • Many herbal supplements on the market today claim to help with depression. Beware: These supplements are typically not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. When trying any herbal remedy for depression and anxiety, adhere strictly to the instructions and consult with your doctor.

    St. John's Wort

    • St. John's Wort has been a popular supplement for depression in recent years. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine says that some scientific evidence indicates that St. John's Wort may be useful for milder forms of depression but not for major depression. Note: St.John's Wort may cause mild side effects and interact with some medications, so consult with your doctor before using it.
