What Are the Causes of Teen Depression?

There are multiple factors that can influence and cause depression in teens. Typically, these factors converge and contribute to the development of a depressive disorder. Teenagers do experience mood changes during this phase of development, however it is significantly beneficial to catch signs of a more serious depression early.
  1. Chemical Imbalance

    • Experiencing hormonal changes during adolescence may contribute to moodiness. However, extreme moodiness and depression may be a result of an imbalance in brain chemicals such as serotonin and norepinephrine.

    Family History

    • Diagnosing depression in teens takes into account family history of mood disorders and genetic vulnerability to the condition. Teenagers are more likely to have depressive symptoms if they are related to someone with this disorder.

    Relational Problems

    • Being involved in unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of depression. Significant conflicts with family, friends, boyfriends or girlfriends and perceived rejection from others will often reinforce poor self-esteem associated with teen depression.

    Lifestyle Factors

    • Sleeping or eating too much or too little can contribute to teen depression. Significant weight gain or loss as symptoms of depression can affect feelings about body image. Poor diet and exercise habits can affect mood.

    Substance Abuse

    • Using mood-altering substances such as alcohol or marijuana can cause symptoms of depression. Substances may also be used to self-medicate a depressed mood. An accurate diagnosis of depression is done when substance abuse ceases.
