Side Effects of Sam-E

SAM-e is a nutritional supplement found in most drug stores. It is commonly used to treat depression. It has also been used to treat osteoarthritis and liver disease.
  1. Effects- Common

    • According to nutrasanus.com, some common side effects from SAM-e are mild gastrointestinal problems, anxiety, insomnia, hyperactive muscle movement and hypomania.

    Effects- Serious

    • EMedTV states that some more serious side effects include sudden change in behavior, Parkinson's Disease symptoms (tremors of any kind) and any sign of an allergic reaction (itching or hives).

    Considerations

    • People who are pregnant, nursing or have Parkinson's Disease should not take SAM-e. Patients with any psychiatric problems should use it under the direction of their physician.

    Drug Interactions

    • SAM-e should not be taken with any other antidepressant, MAOI's, Demerol, St. John's Wort, Tryptophan, Tramadol and Tryptans.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To be safe, NutraSanus states dosage recommendations. Begin the dosage at 400 mg and gradually increase to 1600 mg, depending on individual reaction to the supplement.
