Remeron Serious Side Effects

Remeron is a prescription medication used to treat depression. Despite its effectiveness, Remeron poses risks for side effects in some patients.

    • According to clinical studies published by the Food and Drug Administration on RxList.com, 16 percent of study participants discontinued use of Remeron due to its side effects.

    Common Side Effects

    • Common side effects of Remeron include constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, increased appetite and weight gain.

    Risks

    • Some patients on Remeron develop agranulocytosis, a medical condition that causes the shortage of certain white blood cells. Agranulocytosis increases your risk of developing bacterial, fungal, viral or protozoal infections.

    Warning

    • Infrequently, patients develop suicidal thoughts or exhibit self-harmful behavior related to Remeron. Symptoms of suicidal ideation include anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, aggression, impulsiveness, restlessness and mania.

    Considerations

    • Taking an MAO inhibitor drug within 14 days of Remeron poses a risk for serious side effects such as hyperthermia or seizures. Since it has the potential to cause dizziness and drowsiness, you should not operate a motor vehicle or heavy machinery until you know how Remeron affects you.
