Side Effects of Wellbutrin & Constipation
Wellbutrin is a name-brand antidepressant dispensed in 75- and 100-milligram doses. It is used in patients with prolonged periods of major depressive disorders, and it has been approved for long-term use (over 6 weeks) under the care of a physician. Patients new to Wellbutrin should be observed for the drug's serious side effects and remain under a doctor's care.-
Mental Side Effects
-
Wellbutrin may cause patients various mental side effects as the drug runs its course. The predominant side effects include agitation (observed in the largest percentage of people reporting side effects), insomnia, uncoordination, increased libido, mania and hallucinations. There may also be overall changes in mood, increased irritability and anger. The frequency and experience of side effects depend on the patient's dose, tolerance and preexisting conditions.
Physical Side Effects
-
Patients taking Wellbutrin may experience physical side effects including dry mouth, dizziness, headaches, nausea/vomiting and tremors. Constipation is also a side effect, seen in approximately 26 percent of patients, according to Rx List. It is the second-highest likely symptom after agitation (31.9 percent of patients). Patients also reported flu-like symptoms, rashes and edema. Regular constipation remedies such as over-the-counter liquids and capsules may be used in conjunction with Wellbutrin (there are no contraindications), and patients are encouraged to ingest high-fiber foods and powders.
Dependence
-
Dependence is a serious side effect/risk when taking Wellbutrin. The drug stimulates the transmitters in the brain that produce feelings similar to euphoria. When a patient feels the lift, he or she may (without a doctor's permission) increase his daily dosage or begin taking more pills at once to try to replicate that feeling. Too much Wellbutrin may overwhelm the body and cause a seizure. Patients are also advised never to quit taking the drug flat out; a step-down program under a doctor's care will ensure the best possible transition.
Seizures
-
Patients taking a high dose of Wellbutrin (an average dose is under 300 milligrams per day; high would be between 300-450) may be at risk for seizures, a serious side effect from the medication. Taking a higher dose of Wellbutrin is not the sole contributing factor to seizures. Patients with preexisting conditions are at a much higher risk for seizures, including those with a history of liver disease, head trauma, eating disorders or central nervous system tumor. Inform your doctor of any medical conditions (past or present) before starting Wellbutrin.
Suicidal Tendencies
-
Use of antidepressants such as Wellbutrin have increased suicidal thoughts and activities in children and young adults up to age 24. Patients taking Wellbutrin should be observed for any changes in mood or increased symptoms, especially when beginning treatment and when any dosages change.
