The Disadvantages of Depression

According to Psychology Information Online, over 17 million Americans suffer from depression each year. Since depression affects both a person's mind and body, causing behavioral, emotional and physical symptoms, it can cause some serious consequences.
  1. Sleeping Problems

    • Almost all depression sufferers experience some sleep difficulties. Some remain so anxious and restless that they can never settle. Others never want to leave the bedroom and sleep for hours at a time.

    Job Instability

    • Depression often causes sufferers to lose interest in activities and just do not want to leave the house. These symptoms may impact your work performance, thus even hindering your job.

    Negative Outlook

    • Depression sufferers tend to feel hopeless, like nothing will ever get better. This prevents them from changing their constantly dark, negative outlook to a more positive perspective with goals and dreams.

    Relationship Changes

    • As depression sufferers withdrawal from friends and family and no longer participate in functions, their loved ones may feel hurt and confused. Other depression sufferers no longer desire to engage in sexual intercourse, be it from the condition or the medicine, also bewildering their partner.

    Health Concerns

    • Breast cancer patients were at a 360 percent higher risk of dying if they were depressed, than if they were not. Depressed men are twice as more likely to suffer from a heart attack, and the risk grows for up to 10 years after they are diagnosed with depression.
