Vagifem Side Effects

Vagifem is an estrogen replacement treatment that is available only by a doctor's prescription. Vagifem is most often used in older women who are experiencing dropping estrogen levels as a result of menopause.
  1. Indications

    • Vagifem is used to minimize the symptoms of menopause, including vaginal dryness, vaginal itching and vaginal soreness.

    Directions

    • Vagifem is available as suppositories that are inserted directly into the vagina. Place the tablet into the disposable applicator, then push the applicator as far as possible into the vagina. Press the plunger down until the tablet has been injected into the vagina, then remove the applicator.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of Vagifem include abdominal pain, back pain, headaches, genital itchiness, skin rash, respiratory infections, menstrual bleeding and spotting, unusual vaginal discharge and yeast infections.

    Considerations

    • Contact your doctor if the negative side effects of Vagifem outweigh the benefits of this medication. Your doctor may be able to put you on a different medication that is better suited to your needs.

    Warning

    • Do not take Vagifem if you have breast cancer, if you are pregnant, or you have a blood clotting disorder. Discuss these issues with your doctor before taking this or any other estrogen supplement.
