Side Effects of Nortriptaline

Nortriptyline, also known as Pamelor, is a prescription medicine commonly used to treat depression. It can also be used to treat childhood bed wetting, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic pain and migraines.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • Some of the common side effects seen with Nortriptyline include drowsiness, dry mouth, sedation, constipation, increased appetite and dizziness.

    Serious Side Effects

    • More serious side effects include fast heart rate, confusion, seizures and suicidal thoughts. If these occur, contact your physician right away.

    Special Considerations

    • If you have a history of cardiovascular disease, stroke, glaucoma, seizures, and/or hyperthyroidism or are receiving thyroid medication, closer monitoring is required. Since the more serious side effects can increase your heart rate or cause a person to have seizures it would be difficult to determine if these symptoms were medication related or disease related.

    Warning

    • Excessive consumption of alcohol when taking this medication may lead to the danger of increased suicidal attempts, hostility, or overdose, especially in patients with histories of emotional disturbances or suicidal thoughts.

    Conclusion

    • Nortriptyline is an effective antidepressant, with few side effects. As with any medication, discuss concerns with your physician.
