Cymbalta Overdose Cure
If you or a loved one is diagnosed with major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, fibromyalgia, or diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain, a doctor may prescribe Cymbalta. Cymbalta is the brand name of duloxetine, a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SSNRI). Cymbalta is available as a delayed release capsule in three dosages, 20 mg, 30 mg, and 60 mg. Dosage is extremely important as is monitoring drug interactions, lest overdose occur.-
Cymbalta
-
Frequently prescribed to treat depression, SSNRIs work by blocking neurotransmitters from reabsorbing biochemicals, leaving more available to the brain. As a result, they act as antidepressants and pain inhibitors. In the best case scenario, they will help to elevate mood and maintain it at optimal levels. However, in the case of overdose, duloxetines are a threat and, in rare cases, can prove fatal. Also, taking Cymbalta in addition to certain other drugs can lead to overdose.
Overdose Symptoms
-
Look for these signs: extreme sleepiness, seizures, fainting, racing heart, and vomiting. If you suspect any of these symptoms is caused by an overdose of Cymbalta alone or in combination with other drugs taken, call your doctor immediately. A physician will further look for hypotension (low blood pressure) or hypertension (high blood pressure). In extreme cases, a coma may result, indicating overdose.
Serotonin Syndrome
-
In addition, if the overdose causes the body to have too much serotonin, Serotonin Syndrome may occur. Symptoms of Serotonin Syndrome include agitation, restlessness, diarrhea, rapid heartbeats, elevated temperature, hallucinations, nausea, heightened reflexes, lack of coordination, and quick changes in blood pressure. In case of any of these symptoms or signs, call poison control immediately at 1(800) 222-1222. If the patient is unconscious or not breathing, call 9-1-1 and follow standard first aid procedures as necessary to restore an open airway, unrestricted breathing, and steady heartbeat. Monitor vital signs.
Cure
-
The cure for Cymbalta overdose varies, based on the examination. Patients are often hospitalized for at least 24 hours for observation. Activated charcoal may be used to absorb the duloxetine from the stomach and intestines. If serotonin syndrome occurs, treatment with the antihistamine cyproheptadine and temperature control may be used. Importantly, in managing overdose, your physician should consider the possibility of interaction with other drugs, so that it will not recur.
Recommendations
-
The National Institutes of Health recommend Cymbalta prescriptions be written for the smallest dose possible to help prevent accidental overdose. In addition, you should tell your doctor of all other prescriptions and over-the-counter medications you are taking. Placing the number of your local Poison Control center on your cell phone or in a prominent location in your home is another good idea.
