Lexapro Side Effects
Lexapro, a common treatment option for depression and common anxiety disorder, has been prescribed to over 18 million adults worldwide and has had great results in some users. However, like any other drug, there are certain side effects that can result from extended use.-
Stomach Problems
-
There have been reports by numerous users that abnormal stomach problems have come about as a result of Lexapro use. These include diarrhea, constipation, nausea, indigestion, decreased appetite, vomiting and increased weight gain. It is important to note that only some users experience these side effects.
Sexual Side Effects
-
Sexual side effects of using Lexapro include ejaculation problems (including impotence and decreased sex drive) and problems achieving orgasm. It is important to note that these problems are most likely a direct result of the combination of depression that a patient may be experiencing and the new chemicals being introduced into the body. A patient should be aware, therefore, that these side effects may only be temporary.
Head Pain Problems
-
The most common side effect of Lexapro use is headaches; it has been reported in approximately 24 percent of users. Other similar problems include increased tiredness, insomnia, dry mouth, chronic fatigue from ordinary activity, dizziness, vivid dreams and nightmares, and increased dreaming.
Mental Side Effects
-
There are several mental side effects that have become associated with using Lexapro. Some users have been known to experience suicidal thoughts or behavior, increased anxiety, panic attacks, increased aggressiveness, participating in dangerous activities, extreme mood swings ranging from abnormal happiness to severe depression, unusual changes in behavior and in extreme cases signs of serotonin syndrome. This syndrome, according to the Mayo Clinic website, is an accumulation of too much serotonin, a brain chemical your nerves and your brain need to function. But medications like Lexapro result in too much of the chemical, which causes problems like shivering and diarrhea to more severe symptoms such as muscle rigidity, fever and seizures. Severe serotonin syndrome can be fatal if it isn't treated, but goes away within a day of stopping the medications causing the symptoms. Contact your physician; it's critical.
