Side Effects of Tofranil PM

Tofranil PM is a tricyclic antidepressant and known in its generic form as imipramine, according to the Mayo Clinic. Such medications work on the central nervous system to elevate a person's mood. Tofranil PM is commonly prescribed to adults suffering from depression and/or anxiety, and is also sometimes used for children who suffer from bedwetting. Like any medication, Tofranil PM carries the risk of life-threatening side effects, allergic reaction and overdose. Unpleasant but not dangerous side effects can also occur when using imipramine.

  1. Serious Emotional Changes

    • Serious emotional side effects can occur when using Tofranil PM, according to the Mayo Clinic. People have experienced agitation, suicidal thoughts and tendencies, worsened depression and severe irritability on the medication. Such instances should be immediately reported to a doctor or another health care professional and serious issues may require an emergency room visit.

    Serious Physical Problems

    • Many serious physical side effects are possible during Tofranil PM treatment, according to the Mayo Clinic. These also require immediate medical attention. Some of the possible symptoms are: severe stomach or abdominal pain, fever, bleeding, bleeding gums, bruising, blood in urine or stools, and clay-colored stools.

    Other Serious Side Effects

    • Additional side effects may require immediate medical help, according to the Mayo Clinic. These include: unexplained noise or ringing in the ears, convulsions, cool and pale skin, chest pain, severe cough or hoarseness, dark urine, decreased urination and trouble talking. Other possible serious side effects are: dizziness, fainting, coma, fast heartbeat, hearing loss, itching, and muscle spasms or twitching.

    Overdose Symptoms

    • Possibly fatal overdose is possible with Tofranil PM, according to the Mayo Clinic. Signs of an overdose include coma; blue lips, skin, palms or fingernails; loss of consciousness; confusion; disorientation; lethargy and shallow breathing. Other possible side effects indicating an overdose are: severe sleepiness, pale skin, lips or fingernails; and cold, clammy skin.

    Common Side Effects

    • Tofranil PM can cause common side effects that are rarely life-threatening, according to the Mayo Clinic. Such symptoms are: headache, weight gain, nausea, diarrhea, increased or decreased sexual interest, increased sensitivity to sunlight, problems getting or keeping an erection, peculiar taste in the mouth and increased urination.
