Common Depression Symptoms

Depression is a common mental illness affecting 15 million adults a year in the United States. When recognized, depression is a treatable condition. Medication and therapy are successful treatments for depression.
  1. Feelings

    • Prolonged feelings of sadness and uncontrollable crying are signs of depression. Feeling hopeless and negative for weeks without being able to control it are signs of depression.

    Lifestyle changes

    • When you have lost interest in activities that used to bring you pleasure and you start to isolate yourself, you may be suffering from depression. A lack of interest in sex is another sign.

    Routine

    • Drastic changes in sleep and appetite are signs of depression. Insomnia or oversleeping, and loss of appetite or overeating can be signs of depression.

    Thoughts

    • Having nightmares or persistent thoughts of death or suicide can be signs of depression. Overuse of drugs or alcohol in an attempt to feel better can also be a sign.

    Risk factors

    • Having a family history of mental illness or substance abuse makes your risk of developing depression greater. Stress, a serious medical condition or a traumatic event can trigger depression.
