Where to Go for Help With Depression
-
Identification
-
The symptoms of depression include deep sadness, changes in appetite and sleeping patterns and a lack of interest in normal activities. Depression symptoms also include irritability and an inability to concentrate.
Risk factors
-
A family history of substance abuse or mental illness might make you more likely to suffer from depression. A recent traumatic event or an inability to handle stress can trigger depression.
First steps
-
Go to your family doctor, who can refer you to a psychologist or psychiatrist for further evaluation. Your family doctor might also do tests to rule out any medical cause for your depression.
Treatment
-
A psychiatrist can further evaluate you for depression and prescribe anti-depressant medications to help. Counseling with a psychologist or other mental health professional is also beneficial in treating depression.
Considerations
-
You may be able to find a local mental health clinic or other treatment facilities by checking the phone book or asking for recommendations. But seeing your doctor is the best first step.
Warning
-
Immediately call 911 or go to your local emergency room if you are having suicidal thoughts.
