Benzodiazepines are medications primarily prescribed to treat anxiety and panic disorders.

    • Other uses for benzodiazepines include the treatment of insomnia, seizures, teeth grinding and restless leg syndrome.

    Brand Names

    • Benzodiazepines on the market include Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam), Valium (diazepam) and Ativan (lorazepam).

    Warnings

    • Benzodiazepine should be used for short-term treatment of anxiety; long-term or daily use can lead to tolerance and dependence.

    Precautions

    • When combined with alcohol, benzodizepines can cause dizziness or even coma. These medications can cause respiratory failure, and should not be used by individuals with sleep apnea.

    Withdrawal Symptoms

    • Anxiety, panic attacks, depression, suicidal ideation, insomnia, hypertension, tremors, loss of appetite, sweating, delusions and nausea can be caused by a sudden withdrawal from daily or frequent use of benzodiazepines.

    Prescription Only

    • Benzodiazepines are available by prescription only, since they are Schedule IV controlled drugs under the U.S. Federal Controlled Substances Act.
