Physiological Symptoms of Depression
Depression may be a mental health illness, but it can also affect the entire body in a very physical way. Classic warning signs of depression are constant sadness, crying, feelings of worthlessness and thoughts of suicide. But subtle flu-like symptoms, fatigue and changes in sleep patterns also are major warning signs.-
Aches and pains
-
Muscle and body aches, stomachaches and headaches are all symptoms of common illnesses. But coupled with emotional symptoms, they can pinpoint depression as the cause.
Lack of energy
-
Depression often leaves people feeling exhausted. Depression can reduce energy, motivation and interest. It also can leave you feeling tired, no matter how much sleep you get each night.
Sleep changes
-
Changes in sleep patterns are major warning signs. Insomnia and sleeping much more than normal are both common symptoms of depression.
Appetite changes
-
Some people overeat when they're depressed, turning to food for comfort and to fill the void. Others skip food completely and truly have no appetite or interest in eating.
Weight changes
-
Weight gain is common in people who have no interest in exercise, but have an excessive interest in food. People also may suddenly decrease their food intake, sustaining significant weight loss.
Getting help
-
Most people suffering from depression have a combination of emotional and physical symptoms. Recognize the symptoms as classic signs of depression and seek help. Counseling, support from friends and family and using medication are all ways to get your depression under control.
