The first step to reducing the effects of depression is to know and be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of a depressive episode. This is the most important step. If you can pick up on signs of depression early, you will be able to alert a health care provider and discuss possible treatment plans.

Some of the symptoms that indicate possible depression and that you should be aware of are: depressed mood throughout the day, unusual fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, inability to concentrate, significant weight change or appetite change, recurring thoughts of death or suicide.

Proper diet and exercise are also linked to potential prevention of depression. Eat a well-rounded, healthy diet and maintain regular exercise to improve your overall mental health. Exercise will increase your body's level of certain chemicals that actually make you feel in a better mood. Also, maintain a normal sleep schedule. Adequate rest will also be good for your body.

Keep things organized. Make sure to organize your work, school and other business in your life. When things are neatly placed in their spots and events are scheduled, you will most likely experience a happier mood. Do everything you can to eliminate unnecessary stress from all aspects of your life. This will drastically improve your chances of preventing major depression.

Make the time for friends and fun activities. One sign of depression is losing interest in things you once enjoyed. Don't stop doing the things you love because you feel a little down. Make plans with friends and do the things you have always enjoyed. Not only will this make you happier, but it will boost your overall mood.

While not all forms of depression can effectively be prevented, there are numerous ways that it can be treated. Antidepressant medications can be prescribed that will sometimes completely eliminate depression. If you feel that you are headed for a depressive episode and/or you are experiencing some of the symptoms discussed above, seek medical advice and talk about possible treatments.
