Adverse Side Effects of Seroquel

Seroquel is an antipsychotic, mood stabilizing medication prescribed for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This medication treats hallucinations, social withdrawal and thought disorders associated with schizophrenia, and manages the acute manic and severe depressive phases of bipolar disorder. Patients are advised to avoid alcohol, smoking, and recreational drug use. Seroquel does pose potentially adverse side effects and patients taking this drug must be closely monitored by a doctor.

    • The most common adverse side effects of Seroquel include extreme drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, lightheadedness, irritability and agitation, raised cholesterol levels, exhaustion, headache, weakness, muscle stiffness and cramping, constipation and increased triglycerides count. Higher levels of triglycerides can lead to diabetes and kidney disease if left untreated.

    Other Adverse Side Effects

    • Seroquel presents occasional, less common adverse side effects as well, such as weight gain, vision problems, stomach pains, vomiting, appetite increase, heartburn, indigestion, tremors, increased heart rate, fever, sore throat, lethargy, nasal congestion, backache and runny nose.

    Allergic Reaction Side Effects

    • Signs of allergic reaction are considered to be more severe side effects of Seroquel. Unusual rashes, itchiness, hives, swelling, problems swallowing or breathing and wheezing must be reported immediately to a doctor.

    Other Severe Side Effects

    • Other severe side effects of Seroquel include diabetes symptoms, such as increased thirst, high glucose levels, frequent urination, constant feelings of hunger and fast, excessive weight gain. Internal jitteriness, restlessness, thoughts of suicide, unusual muscle motions and dizziness upon standing from a seated or lying down position are also considered to be severe side effects.

    Extremely Rare Side Effects

    • Extremely rare adverse side effects can also present when taking Seroquel. These include canker sores, grinding of the teeth, migraine headaches, vertigo, anemia, dry eyes, neck pain, nosebleeds, coughing, ringing in the ears, eczema, acne and increased salivation.
