How to Fight Depression
-
1
Recognize the symptoms. Knowing the symptoms of depression can help you better understand what you are feeling and identify areas of concern. Feelings of worthlessness, an inability to concentrate, a loss of pleasure in most activities, significant changes in appetite or sleep patterns and thoughts of suicide are all recognizable symptoms of depression.
-
2
Ask for help. Dealing with depression alone is not only more difficult but often impossible. Seek out a friend or family member and ask for their support.
-
3
Share your feelings. Pretending to be fine or denying you are depressed doesn't help. It allows the depression to keep control over you. Talk with your loved ones and let them know you are suffering.
-
4
Seek professional help. Many times depression symptoms become unbearable and you may be unable to manage your depression within your own support system. If you become clinically depressed, see a therapist for counseling and a psychiatrist for a medical evaluation to explore the possibility of medication to treat your depression.
-
5
Actively participate in your recovery. Engage in treatment, take your medication, attend support groups, record your thoughts in a journal. Doing something allows you--not the depression--to be in control.
-
6
Take care of yourself.Your physical, mental and emotional health are all connected. Ensuring that you take care of yourself physically by eating healthfully, exercising and avoiding high-risk behaviors like excessive alcohol consumption and drug use allows you to address your mental health in a better frame of mind.
