Anger Side Effects of Lexapro

Lexapro is a prescription medication for those suffering from anxiety and depression. Individuals suffering from depression or generalized anxiety disorder take this pill once a day. In the United States, about eighteen million adults have been prescribed this medication. Lexapro restores the chemical balance of the brain and increases serotonin levels. As with any prescription medication, there are several possible side effects associated with Lexapro use, several of them anger related.

  1. Common Physical Side Effects

    • The manufacturers of Lexapro state that the most common side effects associated with Lexapro are sleeplessness, sexual dysfunction (ejaculation issues for men), nausea, vomiting, excessive sleepiness or drowsiness, sweating, fatigue and lowered sex drive. These side effects generally are not cause for alarm and tend to decrease with treatment.

    Behavioral Side Effects

    • The Lexapro manufacturers state that in depression studies, it was not shown that users of Lexapro suffered any behavioral changes or side effects such as anxiety, nervousness or agitation any more than individuals who were not taking the medication. Also, the Lexapro makers stated that controlled studies showed no weight gain or loss from use of this medication.

    Anger Side Effect

    • Several Lexapro users, according to medication feedback websites, stated that they had experienced severe anger as a result of missing Lexapro pills for a few days. However, on the other end of the spectrum, there have been a lot of individuals who have gone on Lexapro to control their anger and depression issues, so many users have reported decreases in angry feelings since taking the medication as well. In general, though, Lexapro is not found to be a medication that will bring on anger as a main side effect.

    Severe Side Effects

    • There are some more serious and less common effects of Lexapro that, should you experience them, you should seek medical attention immediately. These severe side effects include convulsions or seizures, coordination or balance problems, muscle stiffness, twitching, shivering, tremors, confusion, sweating, rapid heartbeat and agitation. Also, if you are having behavioral changes, such as suicidal thoughts, hostility, aggression, hyperactivity, irritability, or panic attacks, you should also seek medical attention.

    • Before you consider taking Lexapro for anger, depression or anxiety, you should talk to your doctor if you have any of the following health concerns: allergies, epilepsy, seizures, kidney disease, liver disease, manic depression (bipolar disorder), drug abuse history or history of suicidal feelings.
