Homemade Recipe for Diabetic Foot Lotion

Itchy feet are common in people with diabetes. The itchiness can be caused by poor circulation, a yeast infection and/or dry skin. About one-third of all diabetics will face skin problems at some point in their life, and some conditions can become serious. Luckily, most skin issues can be easily prevented if caught soon enough. The following foot lotion is good for diabetics, since it helps to combat all three of these problems.
  1. Ingredients For Homemade Diabetic Lotion

    • 4 ounces olive oil or mineral oil
4 ounces Shea butter or Vaseline
      1 vitamin E capsule - 400IU
      Tea tree oil
      Empty bottle with lid
      Electric mixer or fork
      Bowl for mixing

    Direction for Mixing Lotion

    • In a bowl, mix either the olive oil or mineral oil and Shea butter or Vaseline with an electric mixer or fork until smooth. (Note: Shea butter is preferred, because it's an intensive moisturizer and is quite good at treating skin problems in those with diabetes.)

Pierce vitamin E capsule with a safety pin and squeeze oil into the mixture. This acts as a natural preservative and helps with skin cell renewal. Throw empty capsule away.

Add 1/4 tsp of the tea tree oil, which will help combat yeast and bacteria on your skin.

Mix again until everything is well blended, then pour into an empty bottle. An old shampoo, lotion or liquid soap bottle works well.

Getting the Most From Your Lotion

    • Each day before using your homemade diabetic foot lotion, wash your feet in warm water using a mild soap. Do not soak your feet.

Dry your feet well, especially between your toes.

Rub lotion into your feet, paying special attention to the heels and soles. Avoid getting lotion between toes.

Put on a clean pair of socks that don't fit too tight below your knee. This helps your skin absorb the lotion.

Always wear shoes or slippers, even around the house, to protect your feet from injuries.

If your feet are very calloused, it may take time for the dead skin to slough off, but your feet can be smooth with regular use.
