How to Clean Your Blood Glucose Meter

Glucometers or blood glucose meters are part of a diabetic's life. The meter gives a sugar reading in five seconds, so the diabetic can monitor blood sugar levels. Like all devices, care is needed to maintain proper readings. Cleaning your blood glucose meter is easy.

      Wipe your meter. You can do a general cleaning of your meter by wiping it with a damp cloth, which has been dipped in a solution of water and mild soap. Do not saturate the cloth because liquid can damage the inside of the meter.

      Wipe your lancet. The lancet can be wiped with a damp cloth, as well. Do not immerse it in any liquid and never spray cleaning solution on the lancet.

      Disinfect the meter and lancet. At times, you may want to disinfect the meter and lancet because of dried blood or dirt. Prepare a solution of one part household bleach to ten parts water. Wipe the meter and the lancet with a soft cloth dampened in the solution.

      Avoid alcohol and ammonia. Even though these two ingredients are excellent disinfectants, they are not safe for your meter or lancet device. Alcohol damages the LED read out and ammonia corrodes the metal parts.
