Ayurvedic Remedies for Diabetes

Diabetes is a medical condition that affects the creation and release of insulin in order to metabolize glucose. Glucose is necessary as a source of energy in the human body. Ayurveda is an ancient Hindu form of medicine and health that is called a Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) today. Many doctors combine traditional medicines and treatment practices with CAM traditions for the treatment of many disease processes, including diabetes.
  1. Diet Modification

    • Diet modification is often the first strategy in the Ayurvedic approach to offering relief and remedies for those diagnosed with diabetes. Reducing sugars and simple carbohydrates (common table sugars and sugars found in packaged and prepared foods) and replacing them with complex carbohydrates (such as those naturally found in fruits and vegetables) is an important part of improving health through diet. The Ayurvedic approach also drastically decreases the ingestion of fats in the diet to help aid digestive processes and reduce the amount of proteins consumed in order to prevent overwork or damage to the kidneys from processing such intake.

    Colon Cleansing

    • A technique called Panchakarma is utilized to cleanse the body of toxins, antibodies and waste. This method starts with a massage and a steam bath using a combination of herbs. Following that, a fasting period of between one to three days is suggested, on the heels of which comes a purge designed to cleanse the liver, spleen and pancreas. The purification of the body is concluded with a colon cleanse to rid the intestines of any remaining wastes. Common herbs used in this cleansing process include tumeric, aloe vera, neem, onion, garlic, blueberry leaves, arjuna and shilajit.

    Exercise

    • The Ayurvedic approach to treatment and remedies for diabetes includes exercise, most commonly in the form of yoga, which not only serves to strengthen muscle tone and endurance, but to promote enhanced oxygen flow into the bloodstream, tissues and organs for additional benefit. Yoga also serves as an antistress technique that may prevent stress-related damage to organs, including those weakened or compromised by diabetes such as the kidneys, pancreas and liver.
