Levimir Side Effects

Levemir is a prescription medication. It is a man-made type of insulin that is very close to human, natural insulin. It is used to treat the medical condition known as diabetes. It manages high blood sugar levels in diabetics, along with a regular exercise routine and healthy diet. As with any type of medicine, a range of side effects could occur due to taking Levemir.

    • Some common side effects can occur due to Levemir use. These side effects are generally not cause for worry, as they usually subside once the body adapts to the medicine. However, if the side effects actually worsen or persist for a while, it might be necessary to consult a doctor. These include mild pain, redness, swelling, and itchiness where the medication was injected.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects are also possible with Levemir. If these are experienced, get emergency medical help as soon as possible. Some potentially harmful side effects of Levemir are drowsiness; dizziness; passing out; difficulty concentrating; abnormal hunger; confusion; disorientation; chills; seizures; tremors; slurred speech; abnormal sweating; muscle cramping, weakness, or ache; consciousness loss; headache; irregular or rapid heartbeat; mood or mental changes and vision changes.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions can also happen with Levemir. Allergic reactions are considered to be serious side effects. In situations of allergic reaction, emergency medical attention is required. Some signs of allergic reaction to this medication include tightness of the chest, swelling of the tongue, mouth, lips, and face, skin rash, itchiness, breaking out into hives, wheezing, and trouble breathing.

    Hypoglycemia

    • Those taking Levemir should be careful as to avoid getting hypoglycemia, which is a condition in which the blood sugar levels are, inversely, too low. Some symptoms of this ailment are blurry vision, sweating excessively, fast heartbeat, dizziness, confusion, excessive hunger, weakness, problems with concentration, drowsiness, nausea, and headache.

    Overdose

    • If a person thinks that they might have overdosed on Levemir, they should immediately get emergency medical help. Some symptoms of Levemir overdose are sweating, blurry vision, severe weakness, difficulty speaking, stomachache, tremors, confusion, disorientation, convulsions and coma.
