Diabetic Food List for Weight Loss

Many good food choices for diabetics can lead to weight loss and better blood sugar control. By eating properly, diabetics can not only lose the extra weight they have, but can control blood sugar spikes while preventing lows in their blood sugar as well.
  1. Fruits and Vegetables

    • Eat fresh fruit to help with weight loss. Fruit in its freshest form often has the least sugar content as many fruits are canned with heavy syrups or have some form of sugar added to enhance sweetness. Buy and eat fresh fruits to control blood sugar lows due to insulin injections. By eating fruits that are fresh, you can add nutrients to your body as well as healthy vitamins. Drink fruit juice that has no sugar added as well as those with lower sugar in the form of sugar substitutes such as Splenda or Equal.

      Eat fresh vegetables as well as they contain many nutrients and vitamins. their fiber content is good for weight loss as well. Steam your fresh vegetables and avoid adding any extra fat such as butter or oil while cooking as this adds fat to a low fat, healthy item. Cucumbers, peppers and cabbage are great choices for diabetics looking to lose weight.

    Breads, Grains, and Other Starches

    • Eat whole grain bread and pasta to help with your diet. These choices are a great alternative to white bread and past as they contain no nutrients. These types of complex carbohydrates raise your blood sugar, but slowly and are needed as they are converted to energy in the blood. A baked potato or baked steak fries are a better alternative than fried potatoes. Also consider switching from flour tortillas to whole grain tortillas for your use and whole grain rice whenever possible.

    Meats and Protein

    • Eat turkey, chicken and fish on a daily basis to help with weight loss. Bake any meats that you eat and avoid frying anything in butter or oil. Meat is a great source of protein and can be a valuable part of a diabetics diet to the meats' lack of carbohydrates. Avoid pork bacon and use turkey bacon as a substitute for breakfast or on chicken to add a salty flavor.

      Eat low fat cheese whenever possible and avoid adding too much on meat such as chicken or turkey as the point of eating those types of meat is the lack of fat relative to other meats. Cheese can be a great snack, but low fat cheese is preferred for those looking to lose weight.
