Type 2 Diabetes Diet Advice
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, comprising approximately 90 to 95 percent of all diabetes cases, according to the American Diabetes Association. It is usually caused by any combination of old age, poor diet, obesity and hereditary factors. Since the majority of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight, a balanced diet is vital for people living with this disease. Diabetics should also consult with a dietician, who can devise an appropriate meal plan.-
Carbohydrates
-
There are three types of carbohydrates: starch, sugar and fiber. Sugar and starch raise blood glucose levels, which can be problematic for people suffering from type 2 diabetes. Therefore, these types of carbohydrates should be monitored closely and consumed on a limited basis. Sugar- and starch-based carbohydrates include fruit, white bread, white pasta and most snack foods.
Fiber-based carbohydrates are best for type 2 diabetics. Fiber slows sugar from entering the blood stream, helping to regulate blood sugar levels. High-fiber carbohydrates consist of whole grain products, dairy products and legumes.
Fats
-
Fats can be broken down into three categories: unsaturated, saturated and trans fats. Unsaturated fats are often referred to as "good" fats since they lower cholesterol and promote heart health. The majority of your daily fat consumption, 45 grams, should come from unsaturated fats found in fish, avocados, olive oil and nuts. The remaining 20 grams should come from saturated fats found in meat, eggs and cheese. Trans fat should be avoided whenever possible. Foods containing trans fat are usually high in sugar and other preservatives, which cause irregular blood sugar levels.
Cinnamon
-
Adding cinnamon to your diet is a natural way for type 2 diabetics to regulate blood sugar levels. According to a 2007 study led by Dr. Joanna Hlebowicz and published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," cinnamon stabilizes blood sugar. It's one of the few proven, natural cures for type 2 diabetics.
