Foods to Avoid for People With Diabetes

The critical nutritional issue for diabetics is not an elimination of carbohydrates and sugars from the diet, but rather striking a balance between carbs and proteins. There are no foods that all people with diabetes must always shun, though there are certain foods that diabetics should generally avoid or consume only in small amounts. Making the commitment to lower the amounts of these foods in the diet is a healthy practice for anyone.
  1. Sweet Beverages

    • The high sugar content of most sweet beverages makes them some of the most important foods for diabetics to avoid. Juice (even 100 percent real juice), colas, sweetened tea and coffee and flavored milks should be consumed only in very small portions, if at all.

    Sweets and Desserts

    • Everyone's favorite foods are high on the list for people with diabetes to avoid. Candy, cake, muffins, and ice cream are sure to raise blood sugar levels.

    Refined Grains

    • Fiber in whole grains helps regulate blood sugar, so people with diabetes should avoid refined grains like white rice, wheat and instant oatmeal.

    Alcohol

    • Anyone taking insulin or other medications to lower blood glucose must practice caution when drinking alcohol. Never drink alcohol when blood sugar is outside of a safe level (100 to 140mg/dL), and never drink on an empty stomach. Monitor blood sugar after drinking alcohol and before going to bed.

    Processed and Prepared Foods

    • Individuals with diabetes must read labels carefully before eating packaged meals or processed food. Carbohydrates are added to many foods (as are salt and saturated fat).
