Hyperglycemia Prevention

Many diabetics encounter hyperglycemia, or increased blood sugar levels. Preventing hyperglycemia means recognizing the signs and symptoms and paying attention to diet and exercise.
  1. Symptoms

    • High levels of blood glucose can cause excessive thirst, frequent urination and high sugar levels in urine.

    Blood Glucose

    • The American Diabetes Association (ADA) says that you should ask your doctor what your blood glucose levels should be and how often to check them.

    Exercise

    • Exercise can reduce your blood glucose, but only if you have no ketones, or waste products, in your urine.

    Warning

    • The ADA says that if your blood sugar level is over 240 mg/dl, you should check your urine for ketones; if ketones are present, do not exercise, as this will only cause your blood glucose levels to increase.

    Diet

    • The ADA suggests working with a dietician to prevent hyperglycemia by reducing the amount of food that you eat.

    Medication

    • If you experience symptoms of hyperglycemia, talk to your doctor about the need to adjust your medication and insulin amounts.
