Metformin Prescription Information
-
Dosages
-
Metformin is available in tablets of several different doses. Patients take standard tablets two or three times daily or an extended-release tablet once a day. Starting dose is usually 500 mg twice a day of the standard type or 500mg or 750mg once a day of the extended-release version.
Dosage Increase
-
Physicians may increase the prescription dosage if necessary up to a maximum of 2000 mg or 2550 mg, depending on the type and brand.
Extended-Release Considerations
-
Patients should not chew, crush or break an extended-release tablet, because this may cause too much medication to be released at once.
Avoiding Gastrointestinal Problems
-
People should take metformin with food to reduce the possibility of nausea or diarrhea, which are common side effects, especially during the first few weeks.
Other Side Effects
-
Other side effects associated with metformin include gas, bloating and loss of appetite. Reducing the dosage is a consideration if any side effects make the patient consider stopping the drug.
