How to Maintain Your Blood Sugar Level

High blood sugar occurs when high levels of glucose are found in the bloodstream. Having high blood sugar increases your risk of developing diabetes. Furthermore, if you have diabetes, a high blood sugar can cause complications such as coma, eye problems and death. Thus, it's vital to maintain a healthy blood sugar level.

Instructions

    • 1

Stay active. Regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy blood sugar level. Workout for at least 30 minutes a day. Ideal choices include walking, jogging, biking, swimming or aerobic workouts.

    • 2

Increase fiber intake. Fiber slows the digestion of carbohydrates, which can help you maintain your blood sugar level. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains or take fiber supplements.

    • 3

Maintain a healthy body weight. Losing excess pounds can lower your blood sugar and help you maintain a healthy level. Discuss your ideal body weight with your doctor (based on your sex and height).

    • 4

Eat throughout the day. Going several hours without eating can cause your blood sugar to drop, and this often results in fatigue. To maintain your level, eat small meals throughout the day--every three hours.

    • 5

Get plenty of rest. Inadequate rest and sleep can have a negative impact on your blood sugar. Sleep at least eight hours a night to maintain your blood sugar level.

    • 6

Drink milk. A daily serving of milk can delay the conversion of food sugar to glucose. Drink at least one 8-oz. glass of milk a day to maintain a healthy level.
