Supplements for Syndrome X
-
Omega-3
-
Omega-3 fatty acids can protect against insulin resistance. Two lipids in particular are highly protective--resolvins and protectins. Omega-3s are found in fish such as salmon and mackerel, as well as evening primrose oil and flaxseed oil. You can also take it as a supplement.
Alpha-Lipoic Acid
-
Alpha-lipoic acid is a fatty acid that naturally occurs in animal proteins and spinach. It may lower glucose levels, improve insulin sensitivity and protect against a major complication of diabetes, neuropathy or nerve damage. Try taking this supplement with yogurt or other food if it upsets your stomach.
Chromium Picolinate
-
A form of chromium, chromium picolinate may also help to improve insulin sensitivity and regulate glucose levels. Chromium may help insulin work more effectively by transporting glucose into the cells. Chromium picolinate may also improve cholesterol and lipid levels. Chromium is also an antioxidant, so it will protect your body from free radicals.
Vitamin E
-
People who have a deficiency of vitamin E may be at a higher risk of developing Syndrome X and its later stage, type 2 diabetes. Vitamin E may help you control your blood sugar. Try adding vitamin E to your diet either in a supplement form or with foods such as mangoes, apples, peanut butter, wheat germ and sweet potatoes.
Vitamin C
-
Diabetics and those with Syndrome X may have high levels of sorbitol, a type of sugar. Sorbitol causes the cells to lose vital nutrients like amino acids, minerals and vitamins. Vitamin C can help regulate sorbitol levels and protect against damage from high blood sugar.
