How to Use Accu-Chek Multiclix

The Accu-Chek Multiclix device, made by Roche, allows those who need to do blood sugar testing to draw blood in order to take a sample. The device uses lancets to make a small puncture in the skin to draw blood which is then collected onto a test strip for use with a blood glucose meter.

The Multiclix itself is a lancet device, not a blood glucose meter, designed to minimize the amount of discomfort and time taken to draw a blood sample. Small drums that hold six lancets are used along with the Multiclix device.

Instructions

  1. Loading the lancet drums

    • 1

Pull the cap off of the device. Place the lancet drum into the opening with the blue ring end going in first. When it is in place you will hear a click. Replace the cap. Twist the Multiclix device to access a new lancet in the drum before each use.

    • 2

Determine how many lancets are left in a drum before each use by looking at the white stripes on the side of the Multiclix device indicating how many lancets are left. If you remove the cap and see two red stripes on the drum, the drum is empty.

    • 3

Use a drum of lancets until it is empty. If you remove the drum while it still contains unused lancets, you will not be able to reinsert it for reuse.

    Performing the fingerstick

    • 4

Wash your hands with warm soap and water. Warm water will help the blood flow. Allow your hands to dry completely and allow your testing arm to hang loosely at the side of your body for a minute or two.

    • 5

Set the penetration level on the Multiclix device based on your skin thickness. Thick-skinned users should set the level to a deeper level. The Accu-Chek Multiclix device has multiple penetration levels that can be adjusted on the device.

It may take a few uses to determine the ideal and most comfortable penetration level for your individual needs.

    • 6

Grasp the testing finger right below the joint that is closest to the fingertip. Massage the finger tip moving in an upward direction. This is also known as "milking." Squeeze the finger right below the joint below the fingertip for three seconds.

    • 7

Place the end of the Multiclix device against the side of the chosen finger. Roche recommends that the side of the finger as an ideal location for the least amount of discomfort while allowing for a satisfactory blood sample to be collected.

    • 8

Press the release button and wait a few seconds to allow a blood drop to form. Gather some of the blood onto a new test strip.

    Cleaning the Accu-Chek Multiclix

    • 9

Clean the device after each use with mild soap and some warm water. You should not submerge the device in water. A soft cloth can be used with the mild soap and warm water.
