How to Measure Blood Sugar to Get Insulin Doseage

When you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, your physician will have you undergo a series of laboratory tests. The results of these tests will enable him to calculate the needed insulin dosage that you need. Only a licensed physician is authorized to calculate the initial insulin dosage for your treatment. You can learn how to provide your physician with accurate results by measuring your blood sugar with a home glucose testing kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands with antibacterial soap for 1 minute. Scrub between the webs of your fingers and finger nails. This will minimize the risk of infection.

    • 2

Wipe the finger you will prick with an alcohol swab.

    • 3

Prick your finger with a lancet pen.

    • 4

Gently squeeze out one drop of blood. Wipe the first drop with a piece of sterile cotton. Squeeze again and apply the second drop to the glucose test strip. The first drop of blood contains more tissue juices than blood. You will get more accurate results by using the second drop.

    • 5

Insert the blood-soaked test strip into the glucose machine.

    • 6

Read the monitor of the device and record the results in a logbook.
