Side Effects of Lantus (Insulin Glargine)

Lantus is a cartridge system used to treat diabetes. It is a solution consisting of insulin glargine and a clear fluid, and it is injected to help control and regulate blood sugar levels. It is normally taken once a day, and patients have to rotate injection sites. Most people taking Lantus experience few, if any, side effects, but it is important to be aware of changes you experience while taking it because some side effects can indicate a potentially serious problem.
  1. Malaise

    • If you experience weakness, chills or fatigue and drowsiness while using Lantus, contact your doctor immediately because it could signal a serious complication.

    Mental State

    • If you begin to feel confused, faint or suffer any loss of consciousness, or if you begin experiencing headaches, dizziness or changes to your vision, contact your doctor.

    Hunger and Thirst

    • If you are suddenly much more hungry or thirsty, or if you find yourself urinating more often after you begin using Lantus, contact your doctor. This could signal a more serious complication.

    Heart Rate and Breathing

    • A rapid heartbeat or fast and shallow breathing while using Lantus should immediately be reported to your doctor.

    Speech

    • If you begin to slur your speech or your voice becomes hoarse for no other reason while using Lantus, immediately contact your doctor.

    Injection Site

    • Some people experience redness, itching or pain at the injection site while using Lantus. This is a normal side effect and not a sign of a more serious problem.
