Treatment for Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage to body extremities, such as the feet and hands, as well as nerve damage to organs, such as the digestive tract and the heart. Some diabetics do not have pain symptoms, while others may feel a tingling sensation, burning, indigestion, diarrhea or dizziness, as well as other symptoms.-
First Treatment
-
The first treatment is to manage the blood glucose levels so there are not erratic highs and lows. Management includes diet and exercise, as well as medication, if prescribed.
Nerve Pain
-
For nerve pain, doctors may prescribe antidepressants, such as Cymbalta or Paxil.
Skin Pain
-
Diabetics can use creams for skin pain, especially the feet. A typical cream is capsaicin cream. Patches, such as lidocaine, are helpful on the feet as well.
Indigestion
-
To avoid indigestion, doctors suggest that diabetics eat smaller meals and limit fat and foods high in fiber. Doctors may prescribe erythromycin.
Dizziness
-
Learning to stand or sit slowly can help with dizziness. Blood pressure medications may benefit the diabetic as well.
