Food Products Helpful in Diabetes

In diabetes disease management, it is very important to choose foods that will help keep blood sugar low. Foods that are high in sugar derail attempts to control blood sugar. Foods with low sugar and low GI (glycemic index) will be very helpful in keeping blood sugar controlled.
  1. Meat

    • Meat has no carbohydrates, thus any meat will work well. Nevertheless, eat in moderation because the high calories from animal fat can cause weight gain. Chicken, fish, pork and beef are all good.

    Vegetables

    • Pick vegetables with lower amounts of carbohydrates. Avoid the starchy vegetables such as potatoes. Good choices include spinach, bok choy, lettuce and broccoli. A large portion of your plate should be covered in low-carbohydrate vegetables.

    Eggs

    • Eggs have a very minimal amount of carbohydrates and should be eaten in moderation. To reduce the amount of fat and cholesterol, it's best to consume just egg whites.

    Drinks

    • Any drink with low amounts of sugar are good. Water and diet sodas are among the good choices. Fruit juices and sports drinks should be consumed sparingly due to the high amount of sugar.

    Avoid Seasonings With Sugar

    • Avoid seasonings and condiments with high amounts of sugar such as ketchup and steak sauce. Choose alternatives with no sugar such as mustard, salt and pepper.
