Signs of Juvenile Onset Diabetes

Juvenile diabetes, or Type 1 diabetes, is a serious metabolic disorder in which the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar levels. Despite intensive research, there is no cure. Symptoms tend to become noticeable over a short period of time. With treatment, the condition is manageable, but if left untreated, people with diabetes can lapse into a coma.
  1. Excessive Urination

    • Children who urinate frequently, sometimes hourly, or who suddenly begin going to the bathroom more often than previously may be showing a sign of juvenile diabetes.

    Extreme Thirst and Hunger

    • Children with juvenile diabetes are often much more hungry and thirsty than non-affected children. Treatment can help regulate this.

    Unexplained Weight Loss or Gain

    • Gaining or losing weight for no known reason such as a change in diet or exercise can be a sign of Type 1 diabetes.

    Extreme Fatigue

    • Kids with undiagnosed juvenile diabetes are often extremely tired and can sleep for long periods without waking. They also may complain of feeling weak or not having enough energy to complete tasks.

    Vision Problems

    • Kids with juvenile diabetes may complain of blurred vision or frequent headaches.
