How to Get Disability Insurance for Diabetics
Diabetics (Type 1 and Type 2) have difficulty obtaining and keeping health insurance coverage since insurance companies don't want to be responsible for the routine, ongoing costs of diabetic health care. Those who have been diagnosed with this disease find themselves visiting insurance company after insurance company, trying to get any kind of insurance which will cover their medical care, prescriptions, supplies and/or insulin. If you think "outside the box," you can find the coverage you need.Things You'll Need
- Diagnosis of diabetes
- List of insurance companies
- Contact information of high risk pool insurance provider
- Contact information for your state's congressman or senator

1
Make a detailed list of all of the insurance companies that sell insurance in your area. Remember, you have to be honest about all medical conditions you have been diagnosed with, including your diabetes. Call the companies you're most interested in.
-
2
Keep detailed documentation of every insurance company that denies coverage based on your diagnosis of diabetes. Get this denial in writing and follow up on this letter by calling the agent or the company to verify the reason for denial.
-
3
Investigate the possibility of obtaining insurance through your state's high risk pool. Keep in mind that this coverage will come at a high financial cost because this pool covers only high risk applicants. If you decide to take advantage of this avenue, take care of your health and make your premium payments on time.
-
4
Contact your U.S. congressman or senator and explain your situation of being denied disability insurance for diabetes. Send all requested documentation, including records from your doctor, receipts for your supplies, prescriptions and/or insulin. See the link in "Resources."
-
5
Maintain your high risk insurance coverage while your congressman is working with insurance companies to obtain less expensive coverage for you. Be ready to communicate with insurance company representatives who have been contacted by your congressman--and again, remember to be completely honest about your diabetes.
