Normal Blood Sugar Levels for Diabetics

Many factors can affect a diabetic's blood sugar levels. Food, fatigue and illness can all wreak havoc on blood sugar levels. Normal blood sugar levels for diabetics are 70-130 mg/dl before eating and less than 180 mg/dl after eating.
  1. Symptoms of low blood sugar

    • If your blood sugar levels are too low, you might feel confused, shaky, hungry, dizzy, light-headed and cranky.

    Symptoms of high blood sugar

    • The symptoms of high blood sugar levels include excessive thirst, moodiness and frequent urination.

    Dangers

    • Both low blood sugar and high blood sugar can be deadly. Monitoring blood sugar levels is important for diabetics.

    Treatments

    • Some diabetics can control their blood sugar levels through diet and exercise. Some need to take oral medicine to control their diabetes. Others need to take insulin.

If the blood sugar is too low, drinking juice, eating or taking a glucose pill will raise it to normal levels.

    Monitor

    • If you're a diabetic, monitor your blood sugar levels regularly. Keep a journal of what your blood sugars are when you wake up, before eating, after eating and before bed. Share these journals with your doctor, who will create a treatment plan to help your blood sugar levels stay normal.
