Contour Glucose Meter Instructions

Contour glucose meters are used to measure the blood glucose levels in people with diabetes. Measuring blood glucose is critical for diabetics so that they can be aware of their glucose levels and take control of their health. The Contour glucose meter helps prevent potential complications of diabetes, which can reach serious stages like amputation and blindness.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the tip of your finger with a sterile alcohol pad and wait for the alcohol to evaporate so that it does not interfere with the results of the test.

    • 2

Put the test strip into the machine while you are waiting for this area to dry. Do not force the strip. Make sure that the clear window is at the bottom and facing you. The machine will automatically turn on and show a symbol representing a drop of blood.

    • 3

Add the blood sample. Lance your finger and squeeze out the first drop of blood for best accuracy. Do not remove the strip from the meter to add the blood. Touch the reservoir tip to your blood, and let the reservoir fill automatically. The Contour glucose meter will beep when the reservoir is full.

    • 4

Watch to make sure the meter displays the number 5 and counts backwards to 1. Check the results. If the glucose number falls below 50mg/dL or above 250mg/dL, or if the display shows "LO" or "HI," you should immediately get help from a qualified medical professional since this result indicates a serious emergency (see Warnings below).

    • 5

Mark results if that's required by your doctor. There are four symbols to choose from: an apple, an apple core, an open book with a pencil, and an alarm clock. The apple symbol is used to mark a result as "before a meal." The apple core symbol is used to mark a result as "after a meal." The open book with a pencil symbol is used to mark a result as "special note." The alarm clock symbol can be chosen in combination with the apple symbol when you mark your "before a meal" results, so that you are alerted in 2 hours to take your "after a meal" test.

    • 6

Turn off the meter by removing the strip and it will automatically shut down. Discard the used test strip.
