Blood Sugar Test: How and

A blood sugar test, also known as a glucose test, measures the amount of glucose in your blood. Glucose is a type of sugar that your body uses for energy. It comes from the food you eat, and it's transported to your cells by your bloodstream.

There are two main types of blood sugar tests:

* Fasting blood sugar test: This test measures your blood sugar level after you've fasted for at least 8 hours. It's usually done in the morning, before you eat breakfast.

* Random blood sugar test: This test measures your blood sugar level at any time of day, regardless of when you last ate.

Your doctor may order a blood sugar test to:

* Diagnose diabetes

* Monitor your blood sugar levels if you have diabetes

* Screen for diabetes if you're at risk for the disease

How is a blood sugar test done?

A blood sugar test is a simple procedure that can be done in a doctor's office or at a lab. Here's what to expect:

* You'll be asked to sit in a comfortable position.

* A healthcare provider will clean your finger with an alcohol swab.

* They'll then prick your finger with a small needle to draw a drop of blood.

* The blood will be placed on a test strip, which will be inserted into a blood sugar meter.

* The meter will display your blood sugar level in a few seconds.

What do the results mean?

The normal range for fasting blood sugar is between 70 and 99 mg/dL. A random blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or higher is considered high.

If your blood sugar levels are high, your doctor may order additional tests to confirm a diagnosis of diabetes.
