Gestational Diabetes: Can I Lower My Risk?

Gestational diabetes (GDM) is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. It usually goes away after the baby is born, but it can increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Several factors can increase your risk of developing GDM, including:**

* Being overweight or obese before pregnancy

* Having a family history of diabetes

* Being over the age of 25

* Being physically inactive

* Having multiple pregnancies

* Having a history of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

* Having a high blood pressure

* Having a history of cardiovascular disease

While you cannot change some of these risk factors, such as your age or family history, there are several things you can do to lower your risk of developing GDM, including:

* Maintaining a healthy weight before and during pregnancy

* Exercising regularly

* Eating a healthy diet

* Managing your blood sugar levels if you have diabetes

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor about your risk of developing GDM and what you can do to lower your risk.
