How to Use a Bayer Contour

The Bayer Contour, a blood glucose monitoring system, assists in personal diabetes management. Regularly checking glucose concentrations in a person's blood better manages therapeutic levels a person requires for normal functioning. The blood glucose level is checked by sampling a small amount of blood. Contact a physician or nurse when the blood glucose level is below 50 or higher than 250 for instructions.

Instructions

  1. Operating a Bayer Contour

    • 1

Pull the end cap off of the device, pulling from the top to the bottom. Take the lancet and slightly loosen the round cap on it but do not completely remove it. Insert the lancet into the lancet device as far as it will go. Take the round cap off the lancet now, to save it for lancet disposal later. Replace the end cap.

    • 2

Hold a Contour test strip with the gray side facing up. Insert the gray end of the strip into the meter's test strip port. A gray screen appears for a second when the meter recognizes the strip. Within a few seconds, the "Apply blood" screen appears.

    • 3

Rotate the gray end cap to determine the puncture depth. Choose a puncture site such as a fingertip and press the end cap against the site. Press the blue button marked by the Bayer logo. Massage the hand and finger to move blood toward the puncture spot to form a drop of blood.

    • 4

Touch the test strip to the blood. Hold the strip in the blood until the meter makes a beeping sound. Perform steps in a timely manner, otherwise inactivity automatically shuts the meter down.

    • 5

Choose "Before meal," "After meal" or "No mark" to see blood test results when the meter is in autolog. A result appears quickly if the glucose testing is very low or very high. If autolog is off, the glucose reading will automatically appear after 5 seconds.
