What is a blood sugar crash?

A blood sugar crash, also known as hypoglycemia or a hypo, occurs when the amount of sugar in the blood (glucose) drops too low. This can be a serious condition, especially for people with diabetes.

Normal blood sugar levels range from 70 to 110 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). When blood sugar drops below 70 mg/dL, symptoms of hypoglycemia can start to appear. These symptoms can include:

* Shakiness

* Sweating

* Hunger

* Irritability

* Confusion

* Dizziness

* Lightheadedness

* Blurred vision

* Tingling or numbness in the lips, tongue, or fingers

* Seizures

* Loss of consciousness

If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to check your blood sugar immediately. If it is low, you should eat or drink something sugary to raise your blood sugar levels. Common quick sources of sugar include:

* 1 cup of juice or regular soda

* 1 tablespoon of honey

* 1 piece of candy or gum containing sugar

* 4 to 6 glucose tablets

If your blood sugar does not improve within 15 minutes, or if you have severe symptoms, call your doctor or 911.

Hypoglycemia can be a serious condition, but it can be managed by eating healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and taking medication as prescribed.
