WHAT HAPPENS IF GIVEN INSULIN AND YOU ARE NOT DIABETIC?
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate blood sugar levels. In people with diabetes, the pancreas either does not produce enough insulin or does not use insulin properly, which leads to high blood sugar levels. Insulin is used as a treatment for diabetes to help control blood sugar levels.
If a person who is not diabetic is given insulin, it can cause their blood sugar levels to drop too low, a condition called hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
* Shakiness
* Sweating
* Hunger
* Nausea
* Confusion
* Dizziness
* Seizures
* Loss of consciousness
In severe cases, hypoglycemia can be fatal.
If you are not diabetic and you are accidentally given insulin, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. Treatment for hypoglycemia typically involves eating or drinking something sugary to raise blood sugar levels.
