Can someone please explain diabetes in much detail?
Diabetes is a metabolic disease that affects how your body turns food into energy. With diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose, or sugar, builds up in your blood instead of being used for energy.
Types of Diabetes
There are three main types of diabetes:
* Type 1 diabetes: This type is caused by the body's immune system attacking and destroying the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day to survive.
* Type 2 diabetes: This is the most common type of diabetes. With type 2 diabetes, the body doesn't make enough insulin or doesn't use insulin well. People with type 2 diabetes can usually control their blood sugar levels through diet, exercise, and oral medications. Sometimes, people with type 2 diabetes need to take insulin.
* Gestational diabetes: This type of diabetes develops in pregnant women who didn't have diabetes before pregnancy. Gestational diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born, but women who have had gestational diabetes are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
