Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that affects approximately 1.25 million Americans and an estimated 1.4 million people in Europe. The incidence of T1D has been increasing over the past few decades, with an average annual increase of about 3-5% worldwide. The incidence of T1D is highest in children and adolescents, with a peak age of onset between 10 and 14 years. T1D is also more common in certain ethnic groups, such as Caucasians and Sardinians.
