What happens when blood sugar is low?

Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, occurs when the body doesn't have enough glucose, or sugar, for energy. This can cause a variety of symptoms, incluindo:

- Shakiness

- Sweating

- Hunger

- Irritability

- Confusion

- Dizziness

- Fatigue

- Seizures

- Loss of consciousness

Hypoglycemia can be dangerous, so it's important to recognize the symptoms and take steps to correct it. If you experience any of the symptoms of hypoglycemia, eat a small snack, such as a piece of fruit or a glucose tablet, and drink a glass of water. If your symptoms don't resolve within 15 minutes, see a doctor.

Hypoglycemia can be caused by a variety of things, incluindo:

- Not eating enough food

- Skipping meals

- Eating foods that are low in sugar

- Drinking alcohol

- Exercising too much

- Taking certain medications, such as insulin or sulfonylureas

If you have diabetes, you are more likely to experience hypoglycemia. Talk to your doctor about ways to manage your blood sugar levels and avoid hypoglycemia.
