How to Use Accucheck

Accu-Chek provides self-monitoring blood glucose meters that allow you to check your glucose level quickly and easily. There are four meters to choose from depending on your needs. Testing should be done a few times a day to keep up on any changes with your sugar level. If you're insulin dependent the American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends you test at least three times a day. Most insurance companies and Medicare cover some, if not most of the cost of an Accu-Chek meter and its testing supplies. Contact your insurance provider to get detailed information of your coverage.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands using warm, soapy water and dry them. Always start with clean hands when working with your meter. The warm water also helps get the blood flowing.

    • 2

Turn on your meter and insert the test strip into the small opening located on the front end of the meter. Prick your finger with the lancet device to draw your blood. The lancet device is the sharp, pen-like device that came with your kit. This procedure may vary slightly depending on the Accu-Chek model used.

    • 3

Gently squeeze the fingertip to produce a small drop of blood. Touch the testing strip with the pricked finger until it has absorbed enough blood to start the test. View your test results, record into your log book and discard the lancet strips. Follow your doctor's instructions on what to do if your glucose level is too high or too low.
