How to Disable Insulin Syringes

Diabetes patients take insulin injections one to three times each day to stabilize blood-sugar levels. The insulin syringes are typically used at home by the patients themselves. Diabetes supplies that pharmacies dispense include disposable syringes or an auto-disable type of insulin syringe. Patients are able to protect themselves from reusing a needle by disabling syringes after use. This also prevents used syringe needles from injuring or infecting anyone else.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the insulin syringe plunger all the way into the barrel while delivering the medication. Remove the syringe needle from the skin.

    • 2

Pull the plunger all the way to the back end of the barrel. The permanently attached syringe needle will retract into the barrel where it's prevented from piercing anything.

    • 3

Pull the plunger out of the barrel or break the plunger off the back end, depending on the type of disposable syringe. There is no possible way for the syringe to be reused afterward.
