Can Drinking Coffee With Sugar Give a High Random Sugar Level?

Several tests measuring blood sugar levels, or blood glucose levels, exist for patients in danger of having high levels. Each of these tests measure levels differently, however, and drinking coffee with sugar influences only a few.
  1. Random Sugar Level

    • Random blood sugar (RBS) tests, also called random blood glucose tests and casual blood glucose tests, measure blood glucose levels at any point during the day. Healthy individuals do not typically vary dramatically throughout the day, so abnormally high RBS levels may indicate a problem.

    Coffee with Sugar

    • Drinking coffee with sugar has the potential to increase blood glucose levels for certain types of tests, even in healthy individuals. A fasting blood sugar test (FBS) must be taken in the morning before a patient even has morning coffee, or else the sugar in the coffee can alter the results. No preparations accompany RBS tests, though, because something such as sugar in coffee should not increase levels in a healthy person.

    High RBS Dangers

    • Random blood sugar tests typically occur in conjunction with fasting blood sugar tests and two-hour postprandial blood sugar tests, which check for diabetes. RBS levels above 200 mg/dl, especially when influenced by sugar in coffee or anything else, may indicate diabetes.
